Official Visit and Establishment of Cooperation with the Law Enforcement Academy of the Republic of Uzbekistan
At the end of April, the Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Gdańsk hosted a delegation from the Law Enforcement Academy of the Republic of Uzbekistan. The Academy is an elite state higher education institution established by presidential decree in 2022, replacing the former Academy of the General Prosecutor’s Office. Its main mission is to educate and train staff for the Prosecutor’s Office of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
The delegation included Professor Evgeniy Kolenko, Vice-Rector; Dr Bakhtiyor Kayumov, Dean; and Dr Bobir Turdiyev, Senior Prosecutor at the Department of International Cooperation.
The programme of the visit comprised a series of working meetings as well as classes for students.
The guests met with His Magnificence the Rector of the University of Gdańsk, Professor Piotr Stepnowski, who, on behalf of the University, signed a cooperation agreement with the Law Enforcement Academy of the Republic of Uzbekistan represented by Vice-Rector, Professor Evgeniy Kolenko. The agreement provides, among other things, for joint research and teaching projects, student exchange, and cooperation in the field of the administration of justice and legal practice.
Another meeting, organised by the Vice-Dean for International Cooperation and Development, Professor Marcin M. Wiszowaty, was held in a trilateral format, with the participation of the delegation and a representative of the Regional Prosecutor’s Office, Prosecutor Marcin Szumacher, who is responsible, among other areas, for international cooperation. The meeting provided an opportunity for the participants to become acquainted with one another and to discuss the constitutional and institutional position of the prosecution service in both countries. Above all, however, it focused on identifying areas of future cooperation.
Most academic staff members of the Law Enforcement Academy are also prosecutors. In addition to academic and teaching cooperation addressed to students, the delegation expressed strong interest in cooperation and the exchange of experience between prosecutors, including internships, professional placements, and ongoing cooperation in the field of criminal prosecution and the administration of justice. The participants outlined areas of future collaboration in which the Faculty of Law and Administration will serve as a platform for partners from both prosecution services, enabling joint trilateral projects in research, teaching, and legal practice.
The official visit concluded with a meeting with the Dean of the Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Gdańsk, Professor Wojciech Zalewski. The discussion covered teaching cooperation, including within the framework of the Criminology and Criminal Justice programme, research cooperation in the fields of criminal law, criminology, and forensic science, as well as trilateral cooperation with Polish institutions broadly connected with the administration of justice. The guests welcomed the information about the opening of a branch of the National School of Judiciary and Public Prosecution in Gdańsk. They were also introduced to advanced research projects conducted by scholars from our Faculty in areas corresponding to the delegation’s interests.
The delegation also visited the Museum of Forensic Science, whose unique character was met with great appreciation.
In the following days, the guests conducted classes for students.
The first joint initiatives, including student exchange, are planned for the next academic year.
